The Bhutan National Legal Institute (BNLI) has begun a six-day online mediation course (Phase II) for the Local Government Leaders (Mangmis) today, with a total of 37 participants attending the course from their respective Gewog offices.
Mediation is a vital tool in and of itself, allowing for peaceful resolution of tensions and conflicts where this is within a relationship, community or society. Thus, mediation is useful in strengthening the community vitality and enhancing access to fair justice. As per the National Mediation Report 2021, 3824 disputes were settled by the local leaders. And from 2012 – 2021, a total of 39,823 disputes were settled by local leaders across the country. Therefore, the local leaders play a significant role in conflict resolution in their respective communities.
This course provides a unique blend of mediation theory, hands-on mediation skills, and an exploration of the sensibilities and personal qualities required to be an effective mediator. The course is being facilitated by respective Judges and faculties from the Institute. It is funded by Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB).
